confederation letter

Dear Jannie,                                                                                                                                   Sept.29 1865

Since I've moved to Newfoundland I have already been elected a lucky member of parliament. Life on the island has been pretty easy going however it's nothing like life in Britain. In Newfoundland we have no worries about American attacks because we are surrounded by water and we depend on the Britain army second to none. Also another reason why life is so different here is because Newfoundland has no roads and even if I'm simply going to a friends house for dinner we're forced to travel by boat.

That reminds me of our many political situations at the moment. Our largest industry for fishing and seal hunting went bad in the begining of the 1860's and we're begining to spend nearly 1/3 of all money to help the poor. Things are not looking good from a political stand point. Just last week sailors began spotting French Warships and now many villagers are questioning Britain and their navy in case of trouble with France.

To top of all of the political issues Confederation is coming soon and if wa joined we would lose our independence. Also due to the distance between us and Canada West were Ottawa is located we wouldn't have much of a say. If we happened to join there would be a slight chance of losing my job.

Dispite all of the political issues I am enjoying life on Newfoundland for the most part. I miss you very much and I am looking forward to your visit. Please wright back in your spare time.

                                                                                                                                         Love Bob

Save our water, Don't pollute it !

Save Our Water, Don't Pollute It

Alecia

Sir: Water is our lives, without water we would NOT be able to survive. So why do we keep polluting our water sources? The more pollution and garbage that gets thrown into our rivers and lakes, the more we contaminate our own drinking water.

We use water for everything: food, leisure, industry, and activities, but if we continue polluting our water we will no longer be able to enjoy our lakes and rivers. Do you remember when you were younger and you could go swimming, boating, and even fishing without seeing a single piece of garbage? Before we started polluting our rivers and throwing garbage in our lakes the water was crystal clear and there was no garbage to be seen. Nowadays just walking past lakes and rivers you see garbage floating along the sides of banks. Don't you wish you could show your kids what the water looked like when you were younger and take them swimming in the same crystal clear lake you swam in?

Fishing, boating, canoeing, rafting, and surfing are all activities that we enjoy but without clean water we couldn't do. Would you actually want to swim in a lake with garbage floating by your side? Do you want to go sight seeing or on a cruise when all you see in the water is garbage and all you can smell is the pollution from factories? Surely, you would agree this needs to stop!

When you pollute the water you're not only contaminating our drinking water but you're also contaminating the homes of animals and sea creatures. In my opinion, when you throw garbage into the water, you're throwing garbage into someone's home. It is certain that you would not want to live in garbage, so how do you think the animals feel?

Oil spills are the worst type of pollution. If a boat were to break down and begin leaking oil it will not get cleaned up. The oil will stay in the water killing all of the animals and sea creatures that come in contact with the oil. Oil spills are very deadly, therefore it is a good thing that they don't happen very often.

Scientists have proven that the pollution in our lakes and rivers has risen over the last three years. For this reason, we need to do our part to keep our water clean. Some believe that just one person alone can not make a difference. However, just by picking up one piece of garbage and throwing your own garbage in a trash can this will make a huge difference. It is your responsibility to keep our water ways clean.

Rainbows

Rainbows

Alecia Chevalier

Rainbows are multicoloured arcs which span a

continuos spectrum of colours through the sky. But

how are they created? And why do they appear after

it rains?

The most likely explanation for how rainbows are created is by refraction. First sunlight passes through droplets of water, next the water droplets split apart into different forms of white light such as red, blue, green, yellow, orange, and purple, finally a spectrum of colours appear in the sky which we call a rainbow.

The reason why rainbows only appear after rain, mist, spray, and dew is because rainbows only occur when sun shines onto droplets of moisture in the earths atmosphere. Therefor they are only visible when there is moisture in the air and sunlight shinning from behind a person at a low altitude.

Rainbows are optical phenomenons that have been around forever. They consist of a beautiful span of different colours and what you observe depends on your location on the earth.

When light enters the raindrop it splits

into different forms of white light.

Rainbows appear after rain, mist, spray,

and dew.
